Celebrating Humanity

Harmony Day celebrations began in 1999, on the 21st March each year Australia celebrates its success as a diverse society.

Harmony Day coincides with the United Nations In¬ternational Day for Elimination of Racial Dis¬crimination. It gives an opportunity to celebrate our freedom, commonly shared values and concepts as well as gaining a greater understanding of the differences that makes our Australian society rich and dynamic.

Harmony Day is an opportunity for all Australians to celebrate diversity, recommit to our values of respect and goodwill towards fellow Australians form all back¬grounds and most importantly, to say:

NO TO RACISM!

The diverse make up of our Australian society is as long and rich as our history. People from different backgrounds have enriched this country with their cul¬ture, skills and commitment.

Together we have built a successful nation to be proud of, a nation that embraces "those who come across the sea" and those that from afar "still call Australia home".

What is Harmony Day?

Harmony Day, which began in 1999, occurs on 21 March each year and celebrates Australia's success as a diverse society united by a common set of values.

Since 1945 more than six million people have settled in Australia and in 60 years of post-war migration Australia 's population has jumped from 6 million to approximately 20 million.

Harmony Day recognises that Australians come from all over the world.

  • 43 per cent of Australians were either born overseas or have at least one parent who was born overseas
  • Overseas born Australians come from nearly 200 countries
  • Some Australians have been here thousands of years
  • We speak over 200 languages, including Indigenous languages.
